Junior School Review Process
As part of the progress review process in the Junior school, students
who are not meeting school expectations (standards), they along with
their parents, meet with the Class Level Leader and Homeroom
teacher in Primary, and in the Middle School, with the MYP
Coordinator and the Section Head. A detailed discussion, based on
understanding the “next steps” in learning the subject, is followed by
an action plan for intervention by setting targets and providing
additional support and enrichment where necessary. Progress
towards targets set is evaluated regularly until the student is achieving
at or above expected levels. In cases where there are learning
challenges, the Student Care team is also included in the review.
e) Home Learning
It is not the school’s default position to set regular homework, but
rather to consider this as an option which can provide opportunities to
extend the home-school partnership. The purpose of homework is to
promote a love of learning which encourages positive, meaningful
learning experiences between students, parents and teachers.
Questions we ask when providing opportunities for “homework”:
● How does it help students to think deeply about questions that
matter?
● Does it support NMAJS’s philosophy of learning (constructing
meaning through inquiry)?
● Will it provide a relevant, enriching experience that allows families
to interact, and to better understand and support learning
introduced at school?
● Can classroom learning continue uninterrupted if homework
opportunities are not completed (is it optional)?
